Uses for Eucalyptus Aromatherapy
One of the most common therapeutic applications of scent is eucalyptus aromatherapy. The blue forests of Australia are actually named after the mist that comes from the oil of the eucalyptus tree. The oil is quite inexpensive because of its bulk. The scent of eucalyptus is unmistakable, and smells of minty camphor. Many people associate the scent with Vicks Vapo-Rub, a popular product that is rubbed on the chest or used in a vaporizer to help clear congestion. Eucalyptus is the main food for the koala, a mammal native to Australia and known for its adorable appearance. Aromatherapy specialists utilize eucalyptus oil for a variety of different applications.
Perhaps the most common use of eucalyptus oil is as an inhalant for opening the chest and sinuses. It can be added to steam, bath water, and even liniment rubs that are applied to the chest. It is prized for its congestion relieving properties but this is not the only use for this versatile essential oil. Another use for eucalyptus oil is for acne due to its antiseptic properties. Because essential oil should not be applied directly to the skin, dilute a few drops with a little apple cider vinegar and use a cotton swab to apply mixture to pimples.
There are also mental benefits to inhaling the fragrance of eucalyptus. Aromatherapy experts claim the scent can help boost energy and fight fatigue. It increases brain wave activity, and is a stimulating oil. Depending on what you need the oil for, it may be blended with other essential oil like peppermint or tea tree oil. The well-known company Bath and Body works has an Instant Aromatherapy roll-on product that contains eucalyptus and spearmint essential oils. This product claims to increase energy and fight stress and fatigue.
As you can see, there are many uses for eucalyptus aromatherapy. One word of caution is that this fragrance should not be used during an asthma attack. Otherwise, eucalyptus essential oil is multipurpose, refreshing and has a plethora of beneficial properties when used on its own or blended with other essential oils. If you are interested in making your own blends consider trying an essential oil starter kit, which contains multiple oils and instructions. Never apply any essential oil directly to the skin, proper dilution in a carrier oil is required.
